Wapakoneta was a council house of the Shawnee until their removal to Kansas in 1832. The name means "white cloth" and refers to the area's neutrality. The community was platted in 1833 and became the county seat of the new Auglaize County in 1848. Neil Armstrong was born in a farmhouse near Wapakoneta and graduated from Wapakoneta's Blume High School in 1947.
